Hi-Life Gets Its Roof On

hilife1.jpg

The forthcoming Hi-Life Bar & Grill, which will be located at the spot formerly held by Mexican restaurant Mary Ann’s (on 2nd between 78th and 79th), is moving forward steadily and is currently getting its roof on.  The interior is still way off (slightly blurry pic after the click-through) but maybe it’ll be up and running by the end of the year?

And has the progress of Hi-Life officially ended the Mexican menu war?  I hope not. That was priceless when Mary Ann’s continued to put up specials posters — after they closed down — to offset the guerilla marketing tactics of Sante Fe, located just around the corner, which was plastering Mary Ann’s with their menus and hand written notes that said “GO TO SANTA FE.”

But today was the first time I didn’t see Santa Fe menus taped all over Mary Ann’s/Hi-Life’s windows in months.  What gives Santa Fe?  Tossing in the towel?

What’s The Deal With: Old Chambers Store, Bodega On 73rd, 79th & York Revealed

aug15.jpg
Old Chambers store, 76th and 2nd

Last week we spotlighted some of your recent UES store front inquiries — and below check out the info gathered to this point. Thanks to everyone who responded in the comments and via email.

1) 76th and 2nd: Robert wrote “Any idea what is coming to the old Chambers store spot on 76th and 2nd? Heard a rumor that it is leased by the owner of Mo’s Caribbean…hope it is not yet another bank or cell phone store.”

The space is currently under construction (click through to find a pic inside the spot) and according to 78thand2nd commenters CK and Ace it looks like Pottery Barn Kid’s clothing is setting up shop. From Ace:

Right on about the PB Kids store. A little more info- Williams Sonoma- part of the of Pottery Barn corporation has absorbed the Chambers stores into the new Williams Sonoma Home stores- the new Chambers line was just introduced in their catoalogs. No stores open here yet but slated for later this year (higher end PB merchandise). So there won’t be any more Chambers stores.

Upper East Side Best Bars Poll

We’re getting to close to revealing our all-inclusive, neighborhood-wide, ‘Best Bars Poll’ – but you still have time to weigh-in with your thoughts.  Shoot us an email or hit the comments section here, and lets hear your picks for the UES’s best bars and worst bars, the biggest dives, hottest bartenders, worst bouncers, biggest loser hangouts, best for (fill in your favorite team) fans, best places for buy backs – and whatever else comes to mind.

We’ve been collecting opinions for a few weeks now, so here’s a little glimpse at some early favs: Blondie’s is making a strong case in the “Best Place To Watch A Game” category and, sorry American Trash, but you’re nearly an unanimous vote for “Worst Bar Ever.”

What’s The Deal With: Old Chambers Store, Bodega On 73rd, 79th & York

79th.jpg
79th and York

Here’s a round-up of recent questions from 78thand2nd readers about neighborhood happenings.  If you’re in the know, please enlighten us all in the comments section.

1) 76th and 2nd: Robert writes “Any idea what is coming to the old Chambers store spot on 76th and 2nd? Heard a rumor that it is leased by the owner of Mo’s Caribbean…hope it is not yet another bank or cell phone store.”

2) 73rd and 1st: Michael asks “I was wondering if you knew what was going to take the place of the bodega that recently closed on the northeast corner of 73 & 1? i was out of town for four or five days, and on my return i noticed that my corner store was gutted. there wasn’t any notice.”

3) 79th and York: Ace reporter Adam writes in “something is brewing on the northeast corner of 79 and York, previously inhabited by the Chase bank that moved across York a few months ago.” Anyone have an idea what’s going in? (the doors of this space are pictured above)

Thanks Curbed

My stint hanging out as a guest blogger with New York City real estate blog Curbed ended on Friday — thanks to the Curbed guys for having me and making it a great experience.

The comments my posts received were among the week’s highlights for me — some were intelligent and interesting, some were from some seemingly disturbed folks — below are a few worth checking out:

There are some others as well – the full list of posts I took part in is here.

Being a big fan of the NY real estate blog Curbed I jumped at the invitation to sit in and guest blog with them for a week — and that week is here.  Updates to 78thand2nd for the next 5 days will most likely consist of many links to the Curbed stories i take part in, as well as some additional, stand alone posts here.

Best Bars on the Upper East Side?

Quick word association: When you hear “Upper East Side” what comes to mind? “Old New York,” “snooty,” “Park Ave.,” “old money” and “Central Park” might be wedged in there somewhere, but aren’t those just the warm-ups for “bars,” “bars,” “bars,” and, well, more bars?

With that in mind, 78thand2nd is working up a master list of the best and worst bars on the Upper East Side (59th to 96th, Central Park to East River), and we’d love to hear what you think. What are the best bars, worst bars, biggest dives, ones with the hottest bartenders, the worst bouncers, shittiest bathrooms, biggest dickhead hangouts, best ones for a date, for a quick drink after work, places for (fill in your favorite team) fans, best places for buy backs – and whatever else comes to mind.

Let us know what you think! Email us at 78thand2nd@gmail.com.
