What’s The Deal With: Loui Loui, Cocktail Room, Abandoned Liquor Store

Former Loui Loui restaurant, next to Citarella

Below, a round-up of some recent ‘what’s the deal with’ questions from 78thand2nd readers from last week, followed by the latest updates. If you have an additional piece to the puzzle – enlighten us all in the comments section.

1) 75th and 3rd – Marshall wrote in last week asking what was going on with the former Loui Loui restaurant space on 75th and 3rd: “I heard a rumor that Citarella has purchased the space and plans to open its own restaurant there… any truth to that?”  That’s exactly what’s going on.  An inside source says Citarella bought the entire building and plans to open a restaurant in the space formerly held by Loui Loui.

Penang To Close, Maggie Moo’s Exits For Bayside

penang.jpg

More closings in the neighborhood:

1) Penang: Malaysian spot Penang, on 2nd at 83rd, is the latest victim of a rent hike according to a sign on its front door.  The restuarant, which is about a block away from the former DT UT, which suffered the same fate last last month, is set to close Thursday

2) Maggies Moo’s:  Tipster Rob points out that ice cream spot Maggie Moo’s, on 2nd at 75th, has packed up shop. The possible Pinkberry casuality has a sign on its former spot that reads “we’ve moved to Bayside.”  No word on what might be heading in.

What’s The Deal With: Loui Loui, The Cocktail Room, Abandoned Liquor Store On 2nd

loui.jpg

Here’s a round-up of recent questions from 78thand2nd readers about neighborhood happenings.  If you’re in the know, please enlighten us all in the comments section.

1) 75th and 3rd – What’s going on with the former Loui Loui restaurant space on 75th and 3rd?  Besides waging an aggressive campaign against posting bills, looks like a ‘lil construction happening. Marshall writes in “I live on 75th and 3rd and yesterday, I saw a wood facade go up around the restaurant called Loui’s, which closed a few months ago.  I heard a rumor that Citarella has purchased the space and plans to open its own restaurant there… any truth to that?”

2) 73rd and 1st – Michael writes “I noticed what might be movement/preparation for something in the space the formerly occupied by the Cocktail Room (on 73rd between 1st and 2nd).”  The windows have been given the once-over treatment with that “first sign of construction, don’t look in here” paper, now blocking the views inside. Is the former Cocktail Room, which closed earlier this summer, being prepped for something?

3) 78th and 2nd – 78thand2nd commenter Ace raises a question I’d love answered: “Does anyone know why the liquor store next to Bardalino has been under renovations for what seems like forever?”  The spot has been closed for at least a year and a half, with no nothing happening there at all.

A round-up of answers coming later this week!

Upper East Side Best Bars Poll

We’re getting to close to revealing our all-inclusive, neighborhood-wide, ‘Best Bars Poll’ – but you still have time to weigh-in with your thoughts.  Shoot us an email or hit the comments section here, and lets hear your picks for the UES’s best bars and worst bars, the biggest dives, hottest bartenders, worst bouncers, biggest loser hangouts, best for (fill in your favorite team) fans, best places for buy backs – and whatever else comes to mind.

We’ve been collecting opinions for a few weeks now, so here’s a little glimpse at some early favs: Blondie’s is making a strong case in the “Best Place To Watch A Game” category and, sorry American Trash, but you’re nearly an unanimous vote for “Worst Bar Ever.”

Thanks Curbed

My stint hanging out as a guest blogger with New York City real estate blog Curbed ended on Friday — thanks to the Curbed guys for having me and making it a great experience.

The comments my posts received were among the week’s highlights for me — some were intelligent and interesting, some were from some seemingly disturbed folks — below are a few worth checking out:

Bike-Path War: 91st vs. 89th
Second Avenue Subway Scene: Phase I of Phase I Complete

There are some others as well – the full list of posts I took part in is here.

Being a big fan of the NY real estate blog Curbed I jumped at the invitation to sit in and guest blog with them for a week — and that week is here.  Updates to 78thand2nd for the next 5 days will most likely consist of many links to the Curbed stories i take part in, as well as some additional, stand alone posts here.

So, as always, please hit me at 78thand2nd@gmail.com if you have any UES neighborhood tips (and for this week any REAL ESTATE or general NY tips).

And check out Curbed.
