A power outage hit the Upper East Side yesterday, making that the second time in a week. The blackout was started by a manhole fire — which explains the work being done by Con Ed late last night — and mainly hit 78th and 79th streets.
A manhole fire at 4:45 a.m. led to the afternoon outage for 650 Con Ed customers on the block bordered by First and York avenues on 78th and 79th streets, the company said.
The fire didn’t knock out power immediately – but by late morning, people in the area noticed air conditioners and other major power-consuming appliances weren’t working.
A manhole fire? It’s bad enough we have things like this and this and this going on up here – but now we have to worry about underground fires?
